Connor’s favorite superhero is Spider-Man. He loves that Spider-Man is a kid, can climb walls and shoot webs, but what has really stuck with Connor is that Spider-Man never gives up. Connor loves climbing too, and once when he was high on a climbing wall, tired and scared, he wanted to stop. Then he said, “Spider-Man never gives up,” kept climbing and finished the route. That moment has always stuck with us.
Connor’s love of superheroes started when he was little, watching Spidey and His Amazing Friends, and grew into a love for Spider-Man, Marvel and comic book stories. Spider-Man especially connected with him because he’s a kid who climbs, faces scary things and keeps trying. Connor has apraxia of speech, so communicating and being understood can sometimes be hard. Spider-Man and Marvel have also given him something he loves sharing with other kids and an easy way to connect and make friends.
When we asked Connor, he didn’t pick webs. He picked speed and strength. His reason was simple: if someone needed help, he could use his speed to get there really fast, and if something heavy was on them, he could use his strength to lift it off. When we asked what makes someone a hero, Connor said, “They save a lot of people’s lives.” To him, having superpowers isn’t just about being powerful. It’s about being able to help someone who needs you.
