Ocean is a superhero because he chooses to be a boy when the pressure to stay a girl has felt easiest to society. He is authentically himself
Thank you for generously supporting Ocean in this year’s competition. Your participation made a huge impact for The Stan Lee Foundation and their mission to promote literacy and the narrative arts.
Ocean loves Spiderman, ever since he first started watching Spidey and his Amazing friends as a toddler. He loves the way Peter Parker always seems to overcome adversity and can see into the inner-core of what makes each "villain" human. Ocean has watched all of the various Spiderman series and the movies and he always says, "that made me feel great! I feel stronger after watching that, and I am inspired and pumped up! I have my own tingle!"
Our entire family is influenced by fantasy, fiction and comic books. We are readers and we love to create our own unique worlds and use our imaginations to come up with stories, build epic garden fairy homes or lego builds of our own design. We love the creativity of the Marvel Universe in particular because there is always so many underlying themes and lessons. You can't just watch them once - you have to keep coming back and learning more. Every year that Ocean grows, he learns something new.
Ocean would want to fly and climb walls, of course! Just like his favorite hero. He would love to also change the hearts and minds of those that are opposed to kids like him - kids just looking to thrive in a world that may not yet be built for the, but with kindness and acceptance, can easily be available. Wouldn't it be incredible if you could share your empathy and acceptance with someone else, so that they might be able to see from your point of view? What a difference that could make!
